Abel Tasman National Park
The Coast Track
The Abel Tasman National Park's biggest campground and northern rangers headquarters for the Department of Conservation. The name Totaranui refers to the mighty forest of totara trees which stood here in the past.
Accessible by road and blessed with camping facilities for up to 850 campers(!), Totaranui offers some of the most beautiful short walks in the park.
GIBBS AVENUE - This impressive avenue of plane trees was planted by Hannah Gibbs and Jimmy Perrott in 1856. Cuttings from these trees were used for Nelson's street plantings. Jimmy Perrott's spirit is said to haunt his old hut at Silver Point in Awaroa.
