Moutere & Waimea

Visitor Information

Deep into the harvest-heavy Moutere Hills, an alternative route between Motueka and Nelson, you'll discover many talented crafts people, wine makers and horticulturalists.

It wasn't always lush farmland and grapevines.
Pioneer settlement began in 1843 on unfertile clay soil.

After years of intensive farming, German and English immigrants the arrival of tobacco and kiwifruit finally brought better returns.

Later when tobacco farming had ceased and the land had to be put to an alternative use, a young Austrian named Hermann Seifried planted the region's first commercial vineyard on the Moutere Hills in 1973.

Today you can see vineyards everywhere, taste wines at the cellar doors, dine at cafes and see the signs of an early German settlement area ...
a secret worth unveiling.
