The Coast Track

AWAROA INLET
The track skirts around the inlet before entering a bird nesting area (Kia Tüpato) where ground-nesting birds including Variable Oystercatchers (Torea-pango) and Banded Dotterills (Tuturiwhatu) make their home.

Near where this photo was taken is Sawpit Point. Here in early times, gigantic logs were handsawn over a pit. One sawmiller (the "Top Dog") stood on top of the log and held one end of the saw while his unfortunate mate ("The Underdog") held the other end and sawed from below.

In 1869, a fully-rigged sailing ship was found washed up on Awaroa Beach. No-one was aboard and there were no footprints in the sand. A ghost ship? No. The ship had run aground on Farewell Spit a week earlier. While the crew were off seeking help, the tide came in and their ship floated away...
