Moutere & Waimea Activities

Visitor Information

Deep into the harvest-heavy Moutere Hills, an alternative route between Motueka and Nelson, you'll discover many talented craftspeople, wine makers and horticulturalists.

It wasn't always lush farmland and grapevines. Pioneer settlement began in 1843 on unfertile clay soil. After years of intensive farming by German and English immigrants the arrival of tobacco and kiwifruit finally brought better returns. Later when tobacco farming had ceased and the land had to be put to an alternative use, a young Austrian Herman Seifried planted the region's first commercial vineyard on the Moutere hills in 1973.

Today you can see vineyards everywhere, taste wines at the cellar doors, dine at cafes and see the signs of an early German settlement area ... a secret worth unveiling.

Neudorf Vineyards’ wines are the product of a team. Like many small vineyards we run on a great deal of passion and a lot of fun. We nod in the direction of business reality to keep the whole enterprise afloat, but we know that good wines come from the heart.

"One of New Zealand's most admired producers. Tim and Judy Finn have a great track record."
Jancis Robinson MW

"Neudorf Vineyards is one of this country’s very best wine producers and all of the wines that flow from Tim and Judy Finn’s winery in the Upper Moutere are top examples of what is made in New Zealand."

The ICON Centre for Contemporary Art is set in 12 acres of delightful countryside in the Upper Moutere region of Nelson New Zealand.

ICON consists of Galleries, Working Studios, a 10 acre Sculpture Park with an additional native Sculpture Garden and was built by artist Neville Parker as a place for the enjoyment of all forms of art. The Working Studios feature both resident Artists as well as visiting National and International Artists and the performing spaces offer both intimate and larger venue options. ICON has the motto "Resist the Ordinary" and it is the goal of the icon team to present and promote innovative and quality arts within a friendly and fun environment.

The idea of a sculpture park and gallery complex has been years in the planning. Neville has had 5 galleries in the last 19 years in Auckland and Marlborough. All of these galleries have been Main Street operations where people could pop in at lunch time or as they were doing their shopping. Neville enjoyed these spaces and the relationships he built up with his clients and the local communities but he always thought there was room for a more complete experience for both the customers and the artists. ICON is intended to be a viewing, participating, learning and fun place where the primary objective is the sharing of ideas and the enjoyment of all forms of Art. He and his family have pleasure in opening up their property to visitors and artists alike and hope that they will enjoy the many and exciting opportunities ICON has to offer.

Nelson wines are sold all over the world, but you have the chance to experience our wines in the place they are created.
