Established in 1841, Nelson is the second-oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island Nelson was proclaimed a city by royal charter in 1858.

The city's nickname "Sunny Nelson" is earned because it's one of the sunniest places in New Zealand with around 2500 hours of sunshine per year!

Nelson is well known for its thriving local arts and crafts scene.

Each year, the city hosts events popular with locals and tourists alike, such as the Nelson Arts Festival or the annual Wearable Arts Awards.
